New Zealand thrash metal trio Alien Weaponry have released a single entitled “Ahi Kā,” which marks the first new material from the band since their impressive 2018 debut album, Tū. The track remains true to their warrior style, utilizing ear-splitting, pounding rhythms and anthemic vocals in New Zealand’s Te Reo Māori language. It’s time to put on some war paint and get those fists up in the air.
The single was inspired by the history of the trio’s homeland. In 1953, the Auckland city council’s decision to burn down the Maori village of Okahu Bay before Queen Elizabeth II’s visit ignited a 40-year long battle for the native Ngati Whatua to reclaim their land. Since then, only a small portion of the land was returned due to public outcry. Guitarist Lewis de Jong says: “We decided to write about it because it’s one of these untold stories in New Zealand history that really had a great impact on a lot of Maori.”
Listen to the Billboard premiere of “Ahi Kā” and check out the dates for their first North American tour below the embedded. The track will appear on Adult Swim’s Metal Swim 2 compilation, coming out later today, alongside songs by Author & Punisher, Baroness, Eyehategod and more.
