I did a bit of double-take when I read that it’s been five and a half years since Pelican last released an album, but it’s true, although the pioneering Chicago instrumental metal outfit did put out The Cliff EP in 2015. Still: even that was a long fucking time ago (what were you doing in 2015?), and it’s about damn time for some fresh Pelican rockage.
So: “Midnight and Mescaline” has just made its way online along with the announcement of the band’s forthcoming new album, Nighttime Stories, and yeeeeeeeaaaah boy, it’s great to have Pelican back! The track is instantly recognizable as Pelican; it’s got that occasional dissonant chord, the trademark Pelican chug (duh-duh DUN-DUN-DUN) and that deep, mid-paced groove. It’s also got some nifty lead guitar work that gives the track an air of melancholia, and the whole thing is what I’d generally describe as “catchy as fuck.” Jam it below!
Nighttime Stories (great name for a metal album) comes out on June 7th via Southern Lord Recordings; pre-order here. “Midnight and Mescaline” will also be available as a limited edition 7″ single on Record Store Day this coming weekend. Upcoming tour dates underneath the embed.
