Shit That Comes Out Today: September 7, 2018

Football season is finally fucking back. FINALLY. Fuck preseason. Fuck the Raiders, fuck the Chargers, fuck the Broncos. That felt good. Let me know who your team is in the comments so we can trash talk each other, especially if you’re a fan of one of the garbage teams I mentioned above. That’s all. Thanks for listening.

Pig Destroyer
Head Cage (Relapse)
On a playlist with Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Brutal Truth and Anal Cunt
Listen: “Army of Cops”

I’m pretty sure that if I took my campaign to get myself fired from MetalSucks seriously, all I would have to do is shit talk Pig Destroyer and Axl would drop me to the curb faster than he drops stars on an Oceano review rating. However, this album fucking rocks. Since Axl is essentially the Pig Destroyer prophet, go read his review of Head Cage here because there is literally nothing that I could add that he hasn’t already said. Did you think you were going to get an original opinion? Hah.

Clutch
Book of Bad Decisions (Weathermaker Music)
On a playlist with Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu and the Sword
Listen: “How to Shake Hands”

I’m pretty sure that if I were ever to write an autobiography, it would be called the Book of Bad Decisions, but Clutch had to be total dildos and steal my idea. Kidding, of course. Emperor Rhombus describes the album as Clutch having “taken a turn for the acerbic, with a furious and slightly disjointed record that sounds like the simmering undercurrent of disbelief, anxiety, and rage that lies just below the surface of the world today.” Due to the political nature of the album (and if it weren’t obvious by the music video), “How To Shake Hands” is a clear rip on how our douche bag President shakes peoples hands, so that’s always fun. I haven’t said fuck Donald Trump in a while so we’ll end on that.

Dying Fetus/Incantation/Gatecreeper/Genocide Pact
Split (Relapse)
On a playlist with see above ^^^
Listen: “Fixated on Devastation”

Don’t get too excited about this one like I did because you’re going to be disappointed like I was. Although at first glance this looks like the heaviest split in metal history, it unfortunately does not contain any new music and acts as more of a sampler of sorts, containing two tracks from each band on the split. These bands will also be touring together as part of the Relapse Contamination tour so it’s also somewhat of a primer for that in case anyone is unfamiliar with their work. I know. I got excited so I had to make you all suffer too. I’d say I’m sorry but that would make me a liar.

Korpiklaani
Kulkija (Nuclear Blast)
On a playlist with Fintroll, Eluvietie and Turisas
Listen: “Kotikonnut”

I owe my awareness of this band to a certain Austrian friend of mine (Hi, Annalena.) because I was significantly lacking in music to drink to and Korpiklaani were her first recommendation. They did not disappoint. Although they might be a little bit far on the folk metal side of things for me to listen to regularly, I’m always down to slam a beer to this band. Sometimes it’s fun to be upbeat while you drink rather than channeling death and destruction you would with most other metal. This band isn’t for you if you’re looking for something heavy, but if you want something fun, this is the album for you.

Skyharbor
Sunshine Dust (eOne Music/Good Fight Music)
On a playlist with Periphery, TesseracT and Intervals
Listen: “Sunshine Dust”

Skyharbor aren’t your typical prog band in the sense that they don’t just throw randomized instruments in there for the sake of being progressive, but rather, everything in the song has a purpose. Like Korpiklaani, they aren’t the heaviest band in the world, but their sound is dreamy and ambient, which makes them incredibly easy to listen to no matter what mood you’re in. If you like Periphery, or want to like Periphery but don’t like the vocals, then give Skyharbor a shot and you’ll probably like them.
