FORMER Whitesnake member Adrian Vandenberg says it’s impossible to objectively measure whether one guitarist is better than another.
Speaking on the latest episode of the White Line Fever podcast, 64-year-old Vandenberg says he gets “annoyed” at fans who turn music into a contest.
“I’ve played with so many guitar players and I’ve never seen music as a competition,” said Vandenberg.
“I always get a little … sometimes even annoyed when people go ‘oh, this guy’s better than that guy’ or ‘that guy’s better than that guy’.
“You know, it’s not like the Olympics. There’s not a certain way of measuring how you could say some guy’s better than the other one.
“Especially about guitar players. A lot of people get really fanatical and anal about it. They say ‘oh, you know, John Sykes is better than Vivan Campbell’ or whatever.
“I say ‘c’mon, you can’t really say that, for instance, Eddie Van Halen is better than Brian May.
“They’re both really amazingly great at the way they express themselves on the guitar.
“There’s no way to measure it.”
