We recently had the opportunity to talk to Matt James (Singer) of the band Blacktop Mojo. They are a five piece rock band from Palestine Texas. Big things in the future for these guys.
HBH: How did you guys meet?
BM: We used to lead parties of people through the Pacific Northwest on Bigfoot hunts.
HBH: Did you ever find Bigfoot or any signs of Bigfoot?
BM: Sadly no . Had a terrible guide- fired him
HBH: How long have you been together?
BM: We’ve been a band for 5 years now.
HBH: You list a wide variety of influences on your Facebook page, and it’s clear in your music. Being a hard rock band was that organic? Or totally by design?
BM: I think it was definitely organic. We all grew up listening to different stuff and when we write together, we pull from all the different sounds and throw them in the pot.
HBH: What are the bands plans for 2018 and beyond?
BM: We’ll be touring this spring and throughout the rest of the year. We’ve also started writing for our third record.
HBH: You’ve got several cover songs out on the net, what is your favorite to play live?
BM: We enjoy them all, but “Dream On” usually really gets the crowd going.
HBH: What song would you like to cover in the future?
BM: Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”
HBH: Is opening for Bon Jovi the highlight of your career (thus far that is)? Or is something else bigger than that?
BM: Opening up for Bon Jovi was a pretty fun night for us. We also got the opportunity to play with Sammy Hagar and Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels on Sammy’s TV show at SXSW last year. Finding out we’re playing at this year’s Rock Fest in Wisconsin in July with a killer line up of bands was also a pretty crazy high point. It’s hard to pick just one moment. They’re all pretty fun.
HBH: Are you all able to survive playing music, or do you still have the “9-5 jobs"?
BM: No 9 to 5 jobs here. Only music.
HBH: Have you gotten to tour the US yet? Beyond?
BM: We toured all over the US at the end of last year.
HBH: How is the music scene in Palestine? Is it a rock scene? Any cool local bands you want us know about?
BM: Palestine is kind of in the middle of nowhere. We get out and travel Texas quite a bit. Whiskey Myers is an awesome band that’s from here though.
HBH: Question I like to ask.. Sammy or Dave?
BM: I’ve never met Dave, so I’m gonna have to go with Sammy. He was very cool to us.
HBH: Any last words? Shout outs?
BM: Thanks to everyone that supports our bad habits and allows us to do what we love. Hope to see all of y’all in a couple months!
We look forward to seeing you out on the road!
