This was Sound Check Live’s first year of doing this, and I am glad they did. It was the perfect experience to kick off NAMM 2018. The Vision statement / “motto” of SCL are Heard Felt Scene. Heard: Unparalleled Music Talent – Driven by Artists, Felt: Raw Live Emotion – Channeled through Sound, Scene: Vibrant Social Atmosphere -Experienced by All.  The Yost Theater is a National Register of Historic Places-listed building located in Santa Ana’s Downtown Historic District.

Sound Check Live is a monthly Hollywood jam series that features some of LA’s most notable touring and session players and marquee musical talent. Steve Ferlazzo of Ferlazzo Productions, creator of Sound Check Live had this to say, “We’re super excited to kick off this year’s Bash Fest with Soundcheck Live! Big thanks to Brian Tichy and Joe Sutton for bringing the Sound Check Live experience to The Yost on Wednesday, Jan 24th, 2018! We’re lining up some of the biggest A-list musical talent for an evening of kick-ass music!”

Listed below this review is the actual set list of the evening, and when one looks at it, they will get the idea of how intense this evening was for music lovers. The highlights for me are as follows:

House band kicks off the evening with Karn Evil 9. I love that song, and they jumped started the night with it.

The musicians who played “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” were just fantastic and gave us all an excellent musical-spiritual experience.

The “Led Boots” jam was pure harmonious, as I sat in awe and just wallowed in the sounds coming loud and clear. I don’t know how to put into words what it was like, other than colorful metaphor.  Then they did “Real Me,” and my man Stu Hamm just take that to another level.

Foreplay / Long Time” was so spot on and beautiful. Being that I was touched by that Boston album like everyone at the time it came out, I was reliving those moments of hearing it for the first time. That lineup did an unbelievably incredible performance!

Seek and Destroy” and “Number of the Beast” was great!  We have all heard 100s of bands,/musicians play those songs, but Courtney, Nita, and Leah nailed it and brought it all to a new level. For any old school metal head, we were beyond stoked.

Then the 70’s rock kicked it. “Rock n Roll Hootchie Koo,” “Mr. Breeze” and “Funk 49”! And those players brought it to another level. I love Frank Hannon’s playing, and the cats that jammed with him were just as tasty, soulful, getting off and you could feel and tell they were getting off playing!

Then it was Gilby’s turn, and he brought it like he always does. His don’t give a $&% tude, and playing is an always a great rock n roll experience. His “Tijuana Jail” was great.

Then, Ritchie Sambora; and just being honest here, I’ve never really been a Bon Jovi fan per se, but always loved Ritchie’s solos he put in those songs. Tonight, he stripped it down and was a greasy spoon, swamping bluesy all the way live mixed with the intense Shred n Taste from Orianthi. Their set was unique, what they did to the covers they played was great, but, what they did to the Bon Jovi songs was magical. They made them Rock n Roll, Ritchie made it clear, this is how Jon would do it, and this is how he does it. I’m tactful here, but I will say it like this, he played those songs they way they SHOULD be played.

The AC/DC songs, (again, we all heard em 100s of times) but, these cats played them as Solid as AC/DC did back in the day.

This is what any night of Sound Check Live is like. Kick ass players, playing Kick-Ass. It’s always a smooth transition between songs/sets, and the energy never wanes. What they brought to the BashFest Kick off of NAMM 2018 was perfect.
