Joe Perry: Why I smashed a guitar inches from the face of the guy who made it

AEROSMITH icon Joe Perry says he’s at a loss to explain why he smashed an expensive guitar on stage at the weekend – with the man who made it watching inches away.

Celebrating the release of Sweetzerland Manifesto with friends Slash, Johnnu Depp, Dean and Robert Deleo joining him on stage at The Roxy in West Hollywood, the gig was coming to a close with ‘Train Kept A_Rollin'” when Perry took the “axe” metaphor literally.

“It’s one of the best basic fucking guitar riffs in rock & roll,” Perry told Rolling Stone

“We hit every fucking version of the E chord that you could imagine. Everything was screaming; the amps were going. I didn’t know what else to do. All of a sudden my guitar was in pieces.

“It was a really a nice guitar, and the guy who made it for me was in the front row,” Perry says. “That’s why I’m feeling bad about it. It was not anything I planned. It was just that the energy was overwhelming.”
