Book Review: My Bon Scott by Irene Thornton

My Bon ScottBy SUZANNE BUNKER, Rock Club 40

IRENE Thornton, a quiet young girl from Adelaide who loved live music, met Bon Scott in 1971 and married him in 1972. At the time Bon was singing with Adelaide band Fraternity but had dreams of becoming a huge rock star. As we all know, his dreams did come true.

This easy to read book is a pleasant insight into the lives of Irene and Bon during their courtship, marriage, separation and divorce. At the conclusion of the book the reader cannot deny that the two loved each other, even after divorce. It is evident that they had a very special bond.  Although they had difficult times, they remained friends right up until Bon’s tragic death.

This is not your typical rock star biography and nor should it be, as it is Irene’s story. Yes there are facts and figures about Fraternity and AC/DC.  Yes there are stories about groupies, drugs and parties but in most instances that are not detailed stories. They can be found in other books specially written about AC/DC.  This is a love story between a young woman who loved live music and a young Australian Scotsman that would go on to become one of Australia’s most famous rock stars.
